Update 2:10 p.m.: Evanston police had to divert traffic off Central Street between Poplar and Eastwood Avenues for a while this afternoon while gas company crews dealt with a gas leak at 1726 Central St.

The incident was first reported about 1:45 p.m. Shortly after 2 p.m. the street was reopened to traffic, but a fire engine was standing by, waiting for the leak to be fixed. No word yet on what caused the problem..

The location is just east of the Metra viaduct and west of Ryan Field.
