Northwestern University students, faculty and staff — whether they are native Chicagoans or new to the region — will get a fresh appreciation for Chicago’s heart and soul from the book that will be at the very top of the University’s reading list next year.
“Never a City So Real” by Northwestern’s very own Alex Kotlowitz, the longtime writer-in-residence at the University’s Center for the Writing Arts and a senior lecturer at Medill, has been chosen as the One Book One Northwestern selection for the 2012-13 academic year.
Kotlowitz is a celebrated author, journalist and filmmaker who has been employing his compassionate brand of storytelling to chronicle the harsh realities of urban life for almost three decades.
“Never a City So Real” (Crown Journeys, 2004) takes a bit of a detour from Kotlowitz’s usual narratives with a colorful, yet gritty tour of the people of Chicago who have been his guides into this city’s — and by inference, this country’s — heart.
Kotlowitz is drawn to the people on the outside who are trying to clean up or at least make sense of the mess on the inside. They “look at their city from the vantage point of outsiders, and, as a result, they have perspective,” Kotlowitz concludes. “They stand erect in their lives and see things that you might miss if you were standing in the center.” Their stories, he says, are compelling, even heroic testaments to Chicago’s messiness, heart and authenticity.
One Book One Northwestern is a community-wide reading program sponsored by the Office of the President and hosted by the Center for Civic Engagement. Northwestern’s incoming freshmen will receive a free copy of “Never a City So Real” in July and, throughout the next school year, a number of student- and faculty-initiated events will provide opportunities for discussion of the book.
“This book will give our students a special introduction to Chicago people and neighborhoods they might not encounter otherwise,” said Dan A. Lewis, the director of the University’s Center for Civic Engagement, professor of human development and social policy and faculty fellow at the Institute for Policy Research. “They also will get a wonderful introduction to Alex Kotlowitz and his great work.”
When Kotlowitz was approached by Crown Journeys to write a book about Chicago, he decided to get reacquainted with the city that he has grown to love since becoming an “accidental” Chicagoan almost 30 years ago. “Never a City So Real” gave him an excuse to hang out with people he already knew and to get acquainted with others.
One chapter of “Never a City So Real” features Ed Sadlowski, a former labor leader who Kotlowitz first met some 35 years ago when he was a college student at Wesleyan University. The “maverick free-spoken steelworker from Chicago” was in a union hall in Bridgeport, Conn., making labor history, running for the international union’s presidency. “I went away thinking, if this was the proletariat, I wanted in,” Kotlowitz writes. At the time, Sadlowski’s campaign was big news; he appeared on “Meet the Press” and was profiled in “Rolling Stone” and “The New York Times Magazine.”
For the book, Kotlowitz hung out with Sadlowski in South Chicago. A voracious reader, Sadlowski now teaches a labor history class to carpenters and millwrights at a nearby Indiana college. Kotlowitz found himself moved upon learning that the pile of rocks outside of Sadlowski’s home that he continually was fussing with were slabs from mills that have since closed. “I realized that for him it was all about preserving the memories of the guys he had worked with in the mills,” Kotlowitz said.
Other Chicagoans featured in “Never So Real” include
- Jack Woltjen, Kotlowitz’s father-in-law, who, with his wife, Fran, in the 1960s, joined civil rights marches through Chicago’s segregated neighborhoods;
- The always colorfully garbed Brenda and Millie, with whom Kotlowitz has been gossiping over lunch for the last 15 years, whether at Edna’s, once a destination for Europeans looking for authentic soul food, or MacArthur’s, perhaps the most popular soul food restaurant on Chicago’s West Side and Kotlowitz’s favorite, or Manny’s, an old-style Jewish delicatessen just south of the Loop that is a well-known hangout for politicians;
- Milton Reed, “kind of a Diego Rivera of the projects, painting the imaginings and realities of the dispossessed, of the men and women who live in America’s poorest neighborhood”;
- Andrea Lyon, a tough, 6-foot-tall lawyer who in 19 capital cases has saved all of her clients from capital punishment;
- Robert Guinan, an artist who does everything from small pencil sketches to large oils that reflect “the unvarnished quality of those who have little left to lose” and a chronicler of Chicago whose works sell for as much as $60,000, largely in France, but who essentially is snubbed in Chicago; and
- Dave Boyle, a tough, in-your-face ex-Marine who after taking on the powers that be in Cicero woke up from a blast he could see from his bedroom window that had set his garage on fire, burning his construction tools, his two cars, a van and a Volkswagen Beetle.
In writing “Never a City So Real,” Kotlowitz was struck by how all the beauty and fissures of the American landscape — related to race, immigration, religion, politics, you name it — are reflected within Chicago’s boundaries.
In recent months Kotlowitz has been receiving wide acclaim for “The Interrupters,” an award-winning documentary that he made with filmmaker Steve James. The recent winner of an Independent Spirit Award for top documentary, the film offers an intimate look at three members of Ceasefire, an organization that employs former gang members to combat violence.
The film followed three violence interrupters in Chicago as they forged relationships in their communities and saved lives in a landscape marred by neglect and distress. The project grew out of an article published in The New York Times Magazine in 2008.
Kotlowitz’s 1991 book, “There Are No Children Here,” follows two brothers, Lafayette and Pharaoh Rivers, 11 and 9, respectively, capturing their love, sensitivity and intelligence as they repeatedly are tested by the crushing conditions of growing up in the projects. The book was selected as one of the 150 most important books of the 20th century by the New York Public Library.
