The Evanston Police Department will hold graduation ceremonies for the 31st class of its citizens police academy at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 20 at Northwestern University’s Hardin Hall, 633 Clark St.
State Representative Robyn Gabel of Evanston will deliver the keynote address.
Over 600 Evanston residents have completed the citizens police academy program since it was established in 1995.
The twelve-week program offers instruction in the criminal justice system, use of force, traffic law, juvenile investigations, gang and drug enforcement efforts, problem oriented policing, evidence collection and a host of other police related topics. In addition to the classroom instruction, each CPA student also completes a three-hour ride-along with an Evanston police officer in the field.
CPA graduates have become active members of the CPA Alumni Association which has helped remodel the police department’s break room and completely redesigned the department’s exterior landscaping.
