Catch the latest Law & Order? Got your TIVO set to catch CSI? Join your fellow citizens at the next Evanston Citizen Police Academy and experience the difference between television fiction and real policing in your community.

Starting Aug. 31, this 12 week course will take participants through the critical elements of police work in Evanston, including criminal and juvenile investigations, evidence collection and processing, traffic and accident investigations, police tactics and an interactive mock trial conducted by Cook County Assistant State’s Attorneys.

Participants will hear actual 911 calls and see how the Communications Center works, get the real scoop on gangs and drugs from tactical detectives and ride along with Patrol Officers to see the daily duties of Evanston’s finest.

The Citizens Police Academy is FREE to those applicants who meet a few simple requirements:

1. Must be an Evanston resident, local business owner, employee or student.
2. Must be at least 18 years of age.
3. Cannot miss MORE than two classes in the 12 weeks and complete the ride-along and 911 “sit-along” to graduate.

Classes take place every Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in the classroom of the Evanston Fire & Life Safety Services Administration Building, 909 Lake Street, adjoining the Evanston Police Department at Lake Street and Elmwood Avenues. Parking is available for students.

Graduates from the Academy receive a diploma, CPA Jacket, EPD Partnership Pin and are eligible for volunteer opportunities as members of the Citizen Police Academy Alumnae Association.
