City crews are heading out this morning to spread salt on streets in anticipation of freezing rain that’s expected to begin around 11 a.m.

Streets and Sanitation Superintendent James Maiworm says the city could get a quarter inch of ice before the storm is over.

Maiworm says the crews will also be working to salt many of the city’s sidewalks to reduce risks to pedestrians.

He says that though air temperatures will rise to about freezing this evening, pavement temperatures are around 20 degrees — so rain will still freeze on contact with the ground late into the night — and so crews will be out through the night as well.
