ice-around-sewer

Evanston public works and utility crews are dealing with about 30 calls asking for help with street flooding issues today.

Utilities Director Dave Stoneback says crews are finding that in some cases they have to chop through as much as eight inches of ice to open up street drains, and that sometimes even with the drains clear, snow and ice in the parking lane prevent water from draining from the street.

Even with a sewer grate cleared of ice, water still ponded on Grove Street near Oak Avenue. (City of Evanston photos)

As of noon, the city had recorded just over four-tenths of an inch of rain today.
