Evanston Deputy City Attorney Mario Treto Jr. has been named director of real estate at the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced Treto’s appointment today, which is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.

Treto, who joined the city’s legal staff in 2013 as an asssitant city attorney, was appointed deputy city attorney last July and handles compliance, transactional and corporate matters.

Before joining the city, he worked at a Chicago-based law firm focusing on commercial and residential real estate, corporate law and commercial transactions.

In his new job he’ll oversee professional education, licensing and discipline for nearly 100,000 people working in six real-estate-related professions.

Treto has been recognized by organizations including the International Municipal Lawyers Association, the Hispanic National Bar Association, and the National LGBT Bar.

He also serves as board chair of Howard Brown Health, a federally qualified health center with ten Chicago-area clinics and a youth center serving 35,000 patients.

He received his Juris Doctor from the Indiana University Maurer School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts in biology and psychology from Washington University in St. Louis.

City Attorney Michelle Masoncup said she took great pride in the news of Treto’s appointment. Treto’s last day with the city will be Tuesday, March 5.
