City shoveling ‘reminder’ worked for many

Evanston city officials say owners of nearly three quarters of the properties that got warning notices Tuesday about unshoveled snow had cleaned up their sidewalks by the time inspectors checked again on Wednesday.

But Assistant Health and Human Services Director Carl Caneva says 56 of the 195 sites were still a mess Wednesday and inspectors will visit a third time today, issuing tickets if the walkways haven't been cleared, arranging to have contractors do the cleanup work and recording liens against the properties for the cost.

Caneva also says 92 people have called the city requesting a volunteer to shovel their walk, and the Levy Senior Center is managing 74 volunteers to service those requests.
