Evanston aldermen Tuesday are scheduled to approve leases with two more non-profit groups to take over vacant office space on the ground floor of the Civic Center.

Housing Options for the Mentally-Ill in Evanston, Inc., which now rents space at 1132 Florence Ave., plans to lease 2,940 square feet — which was most recently occupied on a temporary basis by the Erie Family Health Center.

The North Shore Senior Center, which has been leasing space at 840 Dodge Ave., is moving to Skokie to reduce its rental cost. But it’s planning to lease 577 square feet of space at the Civic Center to maintain a presence in Evanston.

The leases will earn the city $12 per square foot per year, about a dollar a year more than leases the city signed last year for ground floor offices with the Northwest Center Against Sexual Assault and Latino Resources.

Those basement office rents are considerably less than the nearly $27 per square foot per year that the city makes leasing a small first floor office to the local League of Women Voters.

The city has gradually moved its own offices out of the ground floor of the Civic Center as it has consolidated operations and reduced staff over the past several years.
