City to bus teens for job interviews

It will be virtually impossible for Evanston teens, ages 16 and up, to generate an excuse for not getting a job this summer, thanks to transportation being provided by the city to the Six Flags Great America theme park in Gurnee.

There are two hiring events at the park—one on Wednesday, May 10, and the other on Wednesday, May 31.

The city will provide transportation both days, leaving from the Gibbs-Morrison Cultural Center at 1823 Church St. at 4 p.m. and returning after all the interviews have been completed. The bus is expected back by 8 p.m. each day.

Then beginning Monday, June 12, the city will provide round-trip transportation from Evanston to Six Flags for those students who are hired.

The transportation service for Evanston teens is part of the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. 

First, however, students must apply for a job at Great America online at sixflagsjobs.com. After completing their application, they will need to notify the city online at cityofevanston.org/sixflags or by calling 3-1-1.

Last year, about 1,000 Evanston young people secured summer work at Great America. The mayor’s program also found jobs for hundreds more at about 50 local employers, including Northwestern University, Home Depot, Best Buy, Hyatt House, Salvation Army, McGaw YMCA, Office Depot, Great Harvest Bakers, YoFresh Yogurt Café, and Family Focus Evanston.
