Evanston City Clerk Rodney Greene says Thomas Just has withdrawn his candidacy to challenge long-term incumbent 8th Ward Alderman Ann Rainey in April’s election.

Greene says Just, of 327 Sherman Ave., a broker with The Apartment People rental agency, informed the clerk’s office late this morning that he was withdrawing his petitions seeking a place on the ballot.

A call to Just this afternoon seeking comment was not immediately returned.

Meanwhile Rainey has denied that she ever sought to challenge Just’s petitions, but Greene insists that she raised questions about the adequacy of his petition filing in the presence of several witnesses at the clerk’s office when Just initially filed his petitions, and that it was his belief she intended to formally object to the petitions.

Just’s withdrawal leaves challengers in just three aldermanic contests — in the 1st, 2nd and 6th wards.

Greene says he has been told that formal objections to the petitions of candidates in the 1st and 2nd wards may yet be filed before the deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday.

Greene has scheduled a lottery to determine ballot positions for candidates in the 6th Ward for 7 p.m. Thursday in the City Council Chamber at the Civic Center.
