A company called Tier One Training is seeking city approval to open a self defense training facility at 1017 Davis St. in Evanston.
The proposal from owners Arpun Nagaraja and Hayk Tadevosyan was approved by the city’s Site Plan and Appearance Review Committee earlier this month.
The owners told the committee they plan to have two classrooms in the storefront as well as a retail space at the front of the building.
They expect to have four full-time instructors with a maximum of 30 students on the premises at any one time.
They plan to be open from 7 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturdays.
The special use request for a commercial indoor recreation facility still requires approval from the Zoning Board of Appeals and the City Council.
The space until recently housed the Fit + Frisky pet supply shop, which has relocated to Noyes Street.
The “Tier One” name is a reference to high end training for military special forces units.
