Evanston police say officers on routine patrol spotted a man walking out of the Sherman Plaza garage about 4:45 Saturday morning carrying a large garbage bag with bulky items inside.

Police Commander Tom Guenther says the officers thought the guy looked suspicious, and, when they stopped him, he was evasive in answering their questions.

When they patted him down, they found an RTA smart card in his pocket that had a picture of somebody else on it. That led them to look in his backpack where they found a lot of loose change, jewelry and electronic gear.

After taking the man into the station for questioning, Guenther says, detectives were able to trace one of items of electronic gear to its owner, who said it had been stolen from his vehicle.

The suspect, Dewitt W. Sales Jr., 27, who listed no address, now faces one count of possession of stolen property and is scheduled to appear in district court in Skokie on Aug. 3.
