Evanston police today said the department will be checking over the next few months whether tobacco retailers are obeying laws barring sales to minors.

The police say they’ll give the dealers information kits before the enforcement campaign begins.

The program is being run in partnership with the state liquor control commission. State officials say 90 percent of retailers comply with the sale restrictions and Illinois ranks 7th in the nation in compliance rates.
