Evanston police have arrested a man who apparently was breaking into his neighbors’ cars.

Commander Tom Guenther says officers on patrol about 3:30 Sunday morning noticed a man they believed was acting suspiciously in the 1800 block of Ashland Ave.

The man had a white plastic bag with a flashlight inside that was still turned on. The bag also contained car stereo components and navigation systems along with remnants of broken auto glass.

The officers canvassed the area, found several cars that had been broken into and contacted victims who were able to identify their stolen property.

The suspect, Geraldo Maguellal, 23, of 1834 Ashland Ave., has been charged with possession of stolen property.

Police ask other residents who may have had cars broken into Saturday night or Sunday morning to call the department’s detective unit at 847-866-5040.
