The two-year process of building the new Robert Crown Community Center, Ice Complex and Library is scheduled to start this month.

The project, at Main Street and Dodge Avenue, will include a new 130,000-square-foot building with two NHL-size ice rinks, a 6,000-square-foot branch library, gymnasium, preschool and multipurpose rooms, along with three artificial turf athletic fields and a surface parking lot.

The project will be constructed in three phases:

  • Phase 1, from this month through November 2019, will include construction of the new building and a portion of the new parking lot.
  • Phase 2, November 2019 through March 2020, will include demolition of the existing Robert Crown Center and completion of the new parking lot.
  • Phase 3, March 2020 through June 2020, will include construction of the new artificial turf athletic fields.

The existing Robert Crown Center will remain open to the public until the new center is operational.

City officials say construction work may create some inconveniences for abutting businesses and residents, but the city will attempt to minimize these issues.

Limited parking restrictions on surrounding roadways may be required during portions of the project to accommodate utility work, but these are expected to be short in duration and will be signed with temporary “No Parking” signs posted 48 hours in advance.

The project’s general contractor is Bulley and Andrews, 1755 W. Armitage Ave., Chicago.

The project is monitored by the City’s Capital Planning & Engineering Bureau. For questions or concerns during construction, please contact Bulley and Andrews Project Manager Jacob Hodge at 312-257-5924. General questions should be directed to City of Evanston Senior Project Manager Stefanie Levine at 847-448-8043.

More information is available on the project website.

  1. Crown Center
It might be fun, in light of the Fountain Square debacle ( it’s STILL not finished, operational, problem free etc.), to start a contest to see who can guess closest to a REAL finish date and how much it ends up over budget. And let’s add a nice incentive: if it’s more than one year over the target date and/or $25M over budget, all the city council and Mayor will resign. Doesn’t that sound like fun? It would certainly add excitement!
