The Evanston/Skokie District 65 school board has scheduled a closed-door board meeting for 7:30 a.m. Wednesday to discuss contract negotiations.

It’s unclear whether the special meeting may be a sign of a breakthrough in talks with teachers who are threatening to strike later this month.

Both the union and board have been reticent to discuss details of the issues separating the two sides.

Teachers have been seeking higher pay and more class preparation time, which would also have the effect of increasing costs for the school district which is facing tight constraints on its ability to raise revenue under state-imposed tax caps.
