At the Evanston/Skokie District 65 School Board meeting on Monday, administrators will propose changes to emergency and crisis response plans to include new protocols in the case of an active shooter.
In addition to the District’s current intruder and active shooter response procedure, called Code Red Lockdown, a new active shooter protocol based on Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate (ALICE) will be introduced.
According to a staff memo, “Code Red Lockdown is still an acceptable response that D65 schools drill every year under close law enforcement supervision.”
However, the administration is working with the Evanston Police Department to develop training to ensure that educators from every school can participate in the ALICE approach.
“We are also working to improve communication across all schools with new walkie-talkies,” the staff memo continues, “and are pursuing better systems to inform families about emergency situations.”
