Parents with children who are five years old on or before Sept. 1 are eligible to register them for kindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year, and officials of the Evanston/Skokie School District 65 are eager to make contact with them long before school starts.

Accordingly, they have scheduled a series of open houses and information nights at both the attendance area schools and the district’s two magnet schools.

First, it is important for the parents to know which of the 10 elementary schools are designated as their “attendance area” school.

To do this, officials recommend that they consult the attendance-area maps on the district’s website.

Families interested in magnet schools, magnet programs, and permissive transfers must first register for their attendance-area school.

To give families an inside look at the schools, the district has scheduled open houses at all attendance area schools on Jan. 31, and at the two magnet schools, Dr. Bessie Rhodes School of Global Studies, 3701 Davis St., Skokie, on Feb. 1, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary & Fine Arts School, 2424 Lake St., on Feb. 2.

Then two Kindergarten Information Nights are scheduled to be held at the JEH Education Center, 1500 McDaniel Ave., from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on both Wednesday, Feb. 22, and Thursday, Feb. 23.

Both nights will be open to incoming kindergarten families from across the district, with no set agenda or presentation. Families may attend at any point throughout the evening to learn more about district programs and services, ask questions, and receive assistance in beginning the registration process.

There will be information available on magnet schools and programs, health requirements, school-age childcare program, bilingual programs, school PTAs, nutrition services, transportation, and more.

Registration itself will then be held for the various schools at district headquarters from March 7 through March 10. March 7 will be for incoming Dawes, Oakton, and Walker students; March 8 for Kingsley, Lincolnwood, Orrington, and Willard students; and March 9 for Dewey, Lincoln, and Washington students.

March 10 will be a make-up date for all schools.

Registration on all four days will be held at the JEH Education Center from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on March 7-9, and from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. on March 10.

Families can register on any of these dates, but are encouraged to register on the date specified for their school. Those interested in magnet schools, magnet programs, and permissive transfer must first register for their attendance-area school.

For additional information, parents are encouraged either to email their questions or call the district at (847) 859-8065.

sounds like a very low number. Could it be that the number of new children will be a lot lower in the coming school year?
