“Expanding Approach” — five fall dance concert performances – will showcase the original works of nine Northwestern University student choreographers.

The choreographers — all dance majors or dance minors — were selected by a panel of peers and dance faculty to create original and artistically mature work in two months’ time.

Open to the public, performances will take place at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11; 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12; 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17; 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18; and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19, in the Ballroom Studio of the Marjorie Ward Marshall Dance Center, 10 Arts Circle Drive in Evanston

The annual fall concert is presented by New Movement Project (NMP), a student group that works closely with the School of Communication’s dance program to produce student works and host workshops and residencies with local and national artists. NMP is advised by dance program faculty member Molly Shanahan.

This year’s choreographers include juniors Parker Murphy, Alaya Turnbough, Suzanne Hutt, Rachel Molinaro and Sophia Rafiqi, and seniors Meg Morrissey, Dani Kipnis, Lilly Liu and Christy Stallknecht. Their original works will be performed by an ensemble of 26 student dancers.

Among the concert highlights is a duet by Murphy exploring society’s reservations about human touch; a dance by Molinaro inspired by Martin Luther King Jr. and the volatile events of 1968; and a work by Rafiqi that looks at the close relationships that grow among dancers.
