Democratic candidates swept to victory in local races in Evanston tonight.

As party activists celebrated at Temperance Beer Company on Dempster Street, returns showed that:

  • U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky had won a ninth term, defeating Republican Susanne Antanus by a nearly two-to-one margin.
  • State Rep. Kelly Cassidy of Chicago, who represents a sliver of south Evanston, won re-election to the 14th District seat, crushing her Republican opponent Denis Detzel by taking nearly 87 percent of the vote.
  • State Rep. Laura Fine of Glenview, who represents most of Evanston west of Green Bay Road, won handly over Republican Kathleen Myalls with about 58 percent of the vote in the 17th District race.

Other local Democrats, including State Sen. Daniel Biss, State Rep. Robyn Gabel and County Comr. Larry Suffredin cruised to victory with no opposition.
