The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that Dempster Street is scheduled to be be closed between Sherman Avenue and Sherman Place in Evanston starting Monday, Oct. 31.
The closure is required to drill foundations for a new Chicago Transit Authority Purple Line viaduct.
Assuming weather conditions don’t delay the work, the road should reopen on Nov. 18.
Construction of the viaduct itself will begin in the spring.
A detour route will be posted.
Eastbound Dempster Street traffic will be directed north on Maple Avenue and east on Greenwood Street and then south on Chicago Avenue back to Dempster.
Westbound traffic on Dempster will head north on Chicago Avenue, then west on Lake Street and south Oak Avenue back to Dempster.
Motorists should expect delays and allow extra time for trips through the area.
