Evanston/Skokie school board members and staff took time during Monday night’s board meeting to praise a pair of remarkable employees.

The “High Five!” program recognizes the efforts of teachers and paraprofessionals, who go above and beyond to help District 65 students succeed.

Nominations for the award come from parent’s, students and co-workers.  Two employees are chosen each month.

This month kindergarten teacher Maria Alvarez was nominated by a pair of parents at Dawes.

Nora Bondi said she was amazed when Alvarez sent a hand written letter to her six-year-old child as she began first grade. Martin Laffey praised Alvarez for the individual attention and love she provides to all her students.

Edna Johnson helps support special needs children at Orrington. She was nominated by three of her colleagues including Gloria Iverson who was on hand at the meeting to read her glowing letter of support.

The High Five winners receive a $75 dollar gift card and will be feted at a luncheon in May with all the award recipients.
