The owner of Rex’s Place, a doggie day care facility at 2120 Ashland Ave. in Evanston is planning to expand to offer overnight boarding for dogs.
Kathy Lichtenstein.
Owner Kathy Lichtenstein told the city’s Design and Project Review Committee this week that she plans to add space in a building around the corner at 1625 Payne St. to provide the kennel service with a goal of housing around 40 pets at a time.
The current daycare business serves as many as 100 dogs each day and has been in operation since 2010.
She says she doesn’t plan any expansion of pickup and dropoff hours for the business that now run from about 6:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
Lictenstein is renting the Payne property from Robinson Rentals. She says she’s bought two houses adjacent to that on Dewey Avenue and will use the yard of those properties as outdoor play space for the dogs while she and a manager live in the houses.
The expansion requires a special use approval from the city. DAPR members voted unanimously to recommend approval for the plans to the Zoning Board of Appeals, which is scheduled to review the project Tuesday evening.
