Residents of Evanston’s nearly 5,000 condominiums will get a new garbage hauler next month, and city officials are hoping they can make the transition go smoothly.
City Council last week approved a contract with Flood Brothers Disposal Company of Oak Brook Terrace, which offered a 17 percent lower bid than the current hauler, Onyx Waste Services of Northbrook, for continuing the service.
The changeover means Flood will need to bring in new dumpsters before its service starts the week of April 2, and Onyx will need to remove its dumpsters.
Onyx has charged residents a rental fee for the dumpsters. Under the new contract, Flood will provide dumpsters to residents at no charge.
Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th Ward, said, “We can’t get Onyx to remove even one dumpster, let alone a city full. There are gonna be dumpsters all over the alleys with nobody picking them up.â€
Public Works Director David Jennings told aldermen at the Feb. 27 Administration and Public Works Committee meeting that Flood is fabricating new dumpsters so it will have enough to distribute and that they’ll have a place in town where they can store them until the rollout.
“Flood will have to have theirs in place by April 2nd, Jennings said, “I don’t have a target for getting Onyx’s dumpsters gone, but I’m looking for a week after that.â€
Ald. Rainey said, “Well, at least let’s tell people to stop paying the rental fee to Onyx for the dumpster.â€
