U.S. Senator Dick Durbin has been declared the winner in his race for another term against Republican Jim Oberweis.
The projection by the National Election Pool came shortly after the polls closed at 7 p.m.
It was not unexpected, given that Durbin had shown a wide lead in most polls through the election campaign.
Durbin first won election to the Senate in 1996 with 56 percent of the vote. In his last outing, in 2008 he racked up 68 percent of the vote.
