Residents of Evanston’s 8th Ward were speaking out on Alderman Ann Rainey’s message board yesterday about a “sickenly sweet” odor permeating the southwest corner of town.

Ald. Rainey says it’s the smell of future gardening success. City crews were turning over the huge piles of rotting leaves piled near Mt. Trashmore in James Park.

“The pile is really cooking because of the great weather,” she says.

Once the microbes do their work, the crews put the finished compost in piles at the west end of Mulford St. in the park, Ald. Rainey says, where it’s free for the taking to city residents.
