A Commonwealth Edison spokesman says power now has been restored to nearly 600 electric customers in Evanston who lost service about 2:51 p.m. this afternoon.

The outage affected several downtown buildings including the large office building at 500 Davis St. and others on the block bounded by Hinman Avenue, Davis Street, Chicago Avenue and Grove Street.

Com Ed spokesman Louis Diaz said some customers scattered across the center of Evanston were affected, from Church Street south to Greenleaf Street and as far west as Hartrey Avenue.

Mr. Diaz said all power was restored by 4:20 p.m. and that the cause of the outage is still under investigation.

Com Ed customer counts are based on the number of accounts or electric meters affected, and not the number of people who are without power.

Some workers at the 500 Davis building were sent home from work early because of the loss of power.

A recent report to Evanston’s Energy Commission says the city suffered 189 electric service interruptions last year with varying numbers of customers affected. The outages typically lasted less than two hours.
