Evanston’s Design and Project Review Committee has recommended approval of plans for 5411 Empanadas to open a shop at 809 Davis St.

Nicolas Ibarzabal.

Shop owner Nicolas Ibarzabal told the committee Tuesday that the bakery — with four locations in Chicago and two in Houston — has been in operation for about 10 years.

It also runs a food truck that has appeared at some events in Evanston.

The tiny storefront 5411 Empanadas plans to open in the Sherman Plaza development has about 800 square feet. It was previously occupied by Snow Dragon Shavery and before that by a frozen yogurt shop. The space has been vacant since early 2019.

In case you’re wondering about the name, 5411 is the international dialing code for Buenos Aires, Argentina, the country of origin for the three founders of the business.
