Evanston bike fans will have a chance Sunday to ride where they dare not any other day of the year when the city holds its annual Bike the Ridge special event.
Riders had a police escort to start the the cruise up Ridge from Howard last year.
Bicycle traffic is normally banned on Ridge Avenue, though foolhardy cyclists have been seen ignoring the prohibition signs on occasion.
But on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to noon, cyclists will have city-sanctioned permission to ride Ridge from Howard to Church streets, and cars will be barred from the road.
Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl is expected to be among the first riders starting from Howard as the event gets underway.
The event began a few years ago as a way to celebrate the completion of a Ridge Avenue repaving project.
Children under age 18 are required to wear bike helmets, as required by city ordinance.
A variety of activities and vendors will be available along the route.
