Dan Coyne and Ann Rainey during the Board of Ethics hearing last month.

Evanston’s Board of Ethics has dismissed a complaint filed by Dan Coyne, a Ridgeville Park District board member, against Alderman Ann Rainey, 8th Ward.

Coyne had accused Rainey of engaging in prohibited political activity when she responded to comments he made attacking her during city meetings on April 1 last year.

The board now has ruled that while Rainey’s remarks “may have been intemperate and insensitive,” they did not constitute a prohibited political activity and that she was allowed, as part of her official duties as an alderman, to respond to Coyne’s attacks on her character and integrity.

The board last week also voted to hear at its Sept. 2 meeting a complaint filed by City Clerk Devon Reid and former aldermanic candidate Misty Witenberg against Mayor Steve Hagerty.
