Evanston’s baseball team completed its first season sweep of the home-and-home series with arch-rival New Trier since 2001 as reliever James Allen pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the 6th inning to nail down a 7-4 victory for the Wildkits.
Allen relieved winning pitcher Dylan Mulvihill with one out and the bases loaded in the 6th. He surrendered a run-scoring single to New Trier’s Frank Nicholas, but then retired 5 of the last 6 hitters he faced.
Evanston improved to 18-11-2 on the season and finished Central Suburban League South division play at 9-7 overall. The Wildkits conclude regular season play today in a CSL crossover contest with Deerfield that doesn’t count in the league standings, then open regional tournament action next Wednesday.
Coach Frank Consiglio’s squad scored early and often Wednesday after defeating the Trevians 8-4 last Monday. Joe Franke (2-for-3) banged a run-scoring single in the first inning, and ETHS pushed across four more runs in the second on singles by Marty Fenn, Sam Evans, Mackenzie O’Neil and an error boosted the lead to 3-1.
Evanston rallied for two more runs in the fourth. With one out, Charlie Maxwell doubled and came around to score on Jack Blanchard’s single. Blanchard also came in on a single by Eli Otting and a fielder’s choice.
Winning pitcher Mulvihill scattered 8 hits, walked 4 and struck out 2. Only 2 of the runs he yielded were earned.
