Mike Ellis, the boys head basketball coach at Richwoods High School in Peoria for the last seven years, is the new boys head basketball coach at Evanston Township High School.

ETHS Athletic Director Chris Livatino announced the appointment today in a news release.

“Mike Ellis is not only an outstanding basketball coach but also the perfect fit for the ETHS basketball program. He sets high expectations for his players on the court, in the class room and in the community," Livatino said in the release.

"He is one of the top high school basketball coaches in the state of Illinois and was instrumental in building the renowned basketball program at Richwoods High School and he will bring the same type of success and energy to ETHS,” he added.

Ellis will be taking over for Bobby Locke, who was the Wildkits head coach for five years before resigning during the off season.

In seven seasons at Richwoods, Ellis led the Knights to a 156-55 record, including a historic 30-3 mark in 2009-10, the most wins in the school’s history.

During Ellis’ tenure, the Knights won four Mid-State Conference Championships, six IHSA Regional Championships and three IHSA Sectional Championships. This past season, Ellis led the Knights to their second IHSA State Championship game.

In a statement Ellis said, "Taking the basketball coaching job in Evanston was the easy part of the decision. Leaving Richwoods and the Peoria area certainly was the hard part for my family and I. We developed so many good relationships in Peoria and look forward to doing the same in Evanston."

Before taking over as the head coach at Richwoods, Ellis was assistant coach there for eight seasons. The previous two years, Ellis was an assistant coach at Iowa City West High School, Iowa City, Iowa.

Ellis has taught physical education in Peoria at the middle school and high school level for the past 16 years, and will be joining the ETHS physical education department. Ellis is an Ohio native who graduated from the University of Iowa with a B.S. in Physical Education K-12. He holds an M.S. in Education Administration from Illinois State University.

Ellis is a three-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association “Coach of the Year,” and has coached a number of high-caliber players, including four Division 1 scholarship players to the University of Illinois, Furhman University and Bradley University.

Ellis and his wife, Lisa, have three children.
