Evanston’s boys and girls cross country teams both took successful first steps on the Illinois High Association state postseason paths Saturday at the Class 3A Niles West Regional.
The Wildkit boys scored a third place finish and the girls squad placed fourth, automatically advancing with top 5 finishes to next Saturday’s Lake Park Sectional.
Coach Donald Michelin Jr.’s boys team put three runners in the top 10 and scored 61 points, third best behind Maine South (47) and New Trier (61). Also advancing were Loyola Academy (98) and Lake Park (124) in the 10-team field.
Leading the way for the Wildkits were senior Logan Singer, 4th in 15 minutes, 38 seconds on the 3-mile course; senior Joey Eovaldi, 5th in 15:43; and sophomore James Moran, 9th in 15:56. The Kits also counted junior Max Ebeling, 19th in 16:15, and junior Julion Michelin, 24th in 16:26.
In the girls competition, Evanston senior Enyaeva Michelin captured the individual title with a winning time of 17:30, a full 40 seconds faster than runnerup Olivia Niziolek of Maine South. Michelin’s win boosted ETHS to an actual tie with Loyola Academy with 75 points apiece, but the Ramblers were awarded third due to a tiebreaker.
