Evanston eases past Deerfield in CSL Showcase game

The season-ending matchup of two division winners in the Central Suburban League isn’t officially identified as a “championship” game.

When the idea was originally brought up for the crossover games to conclude the regular season in basketball, athletic directors thought it was better to declare it the “CSL Showcase” game.

No trophy is awarded to the winner, but the most important thing for Evanston was the championship mindset the Wildkits employed in a 47-33 smothering of North division champion Deerfield Wednesday night at Beardsley Gym.

That’s the approach ETHS head coach Mike Ellis wants to see more of starting next week when the Wildkits host a Class 4A regional tournament.

Evanston opened Wednesday’s contest by breaking out to a 12-0 lead and limited the Warriors (17-11 overall) to 32 percent shooting from the floor after that. The Kits improved to 18-8.

Evanston’s Nojel Eastern (11 points, 3 assists) and Elijah Henry (10 points, 7 rebounds), who earlier in the week were named to the all-South division team, combined for as many points as the four Warriors who earned all-North division recognition — Joey Lane with 12, Nick Zwart with 4, Sam Kuznetsky with 3 and Jordan Baum with 2.
