Evanston, Northwestern gear up for game days

The city of Evanston and Northwestern University celebrated the start of a new football season at the 'Kits and 'Cats kick-off event tonight.

The city of Evanston and Northwestern University celebrated the start of a new football season at the 'Kits and 'Cats kick-off event tonight on Sherman Street near Clark Street.. 

NU's Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Jim Phillips presented Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl with her very own number 51 NU Wildcats jersey, a symbol of unity with the city.

NU Football Coach Pat Fitzgerald also highlighted the team's relationship with the city. 

"We wouldn't be able to have the type of success we have had without you, the city of Evanston," he said. 

The Big Ten team will play the Maine Black Bears on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Ryan Field. 

ETHS Football Coach Mike "Buzz" Burzawa also praised the community for their support of the high school team.

"In 2008, when I came to Evanston, the first thing I realized was the pride the community has and the history that is second to none," he said.

"Our goal is simple: to return Evanston WildKits to the glory days."

The ETHS team will play the Maine West Warriors on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Lazier FIeld.

The ETHS and NU marching bands performed classic and contemporary numbers. NU's WildPride Spirit Squad and ETHS cheerleaders performed along with the schools' respective color guards.
