Evanston Now has a different look this morning — designed to better serve users of smart phones and tablet computers.

The new look features what’s called responsive site design — in which the web page adjusts its appearance to fit the size of the screen you’re using — whether that’s a giant screen on your desktop or a small screen on your mobile phone.

The transition has been a major project, and to get it done we’ve had to make some compromises.

You may notice that comments submitted over the last week have disappeared. You may also notice that a few recent stories and event listings didn’t make the transition — at least not yet. And, for the moment, the crime map has gone away.

We plan to add more features to the site in coming months and refine the responsive design to give users an even better experience.

As always, we appreciate your comments.

Bill Smith is the editor and publisher of Evanston Now.

  1. Future looks good

It looks good but the comments of the last week wasn't all that disappeared. All comments are gone for all stories going back to the beginning of NOW.

Huge improvement over past layout and editor options.

    Nice job for the future.

    1. Comments

I just checked, and comments are present for stories from Oct. 18 and earlier.

Of course, not all stories get comments.

  2. Not right yet

Your font is too big. Spacing is off. Need to do a lot of scrolling to do any reading. Other than that it looks great.

    1. Hi Bobo,

      Hi Bobo,

If you'd like a more compact display of story summaries, try the News page:

The size of the headline font on the home page is something I'm looking for more feedback on.

      1. It’s definitely too big

Kind of a turnoff, actually. Any way you can make the News page the default page?

  3. Evanston Now new Look

Looking good. the tip on  the News Page  brings it to a nice size. Bill for some reason I get part  if not all of the first sentance  of a story  being printed to the right of a picture at top of story.

  4. More suggestions

Glad to see number of comments on posts. Thanks. I maintain liking the recent comments feed.

The "reply" link in comments could be as promenient as the author and time (i.e., blue). IMO it _sould be_ moreso.

Re: the headline font, I think the size is fine but I think you could increase the margin-top rule by 1.5-2x the current space to more clearly separate stories. That might be a personal style preference of mine but I think it is worth trying.

  5. Your title font size seems

Your title font size seems small- and underwhelming. Needs to be more noticable. Also, it's nice to be able to see how many comments each story gets easily. Maybe make it in bold. It would also be nice to have a direct link off the comment number directly to the comments. On some of the bigger stories you have to click on the title and then scroll to read the comments.

Nice job though. Appreciate the request for input. Glad to see you using open source software.
