A report by Verizon Business ranks Evanston as the 14th best small city in the nation in which to start a business.
Only one other Illinois city, Schaumburg, made the list of the Top 50 cities, and it came in 31st.
The ranking was based on six metrics: education level of the local workforce, in-city commute times, income per capita, broadband access, availability of SBA loans, and overall tax friendliness.
Based upon these criteria, Portland, Maine, came in first.
A small city was defined as one with a population of 50,000 to 75,000, which included about 300 cities across America.
Other cities in the Top Ten included Weston, Fla.,; Missoula, Mont.; Southfield, Mich.; Delray Beach, Fla.; South Jordan, Utah; Kissimmee, Fla.; Rochester Hills, Mich.; Rapid City, S.D.; and Bismarck, N.D.
