This year Chanukah, the Festival of Lights and Freedom, is being observed from the evening of Dec. 1 to 10. The Evanston  public lighting ceremony will take place Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 5:30 p.m. at Fountain Square downtown.

The celebration will feature  Mayor Stephen Hagerty and Chief of Police Richard Eddington together with alderman and government officials lighting of Evanston's largest, 10-foot high Menorah.

This will be the 26th time in the city’s history that its citizens will be able to enjoy this symbol and to celebrate their heritage in the center of Downtown Evanston.

The event will feature Northwestern University's premier acapella group Asterik.

The Chanukah celebration is sponsored by the Tannenbaum Chabad House - Northwestern Jewish Center.
