On April 7, following the matinee performance of Le Jardin de Mélodies, The Newberry Consort hosts an elegant gala fundraiser at a unique Evanston venue -- The Halim Time & Glass Museum.
The Newberry Consort is one of Chicago’s best-loved and established ensembles dedicated to the performance of early music. Each season, the Consort brings together a star-studded roster of local and international artists to perform unique programs of music from the 13th-18th centuries.
April 7th’s A Musical Banquet promises to be a refined soirée of musical and culinary delights. As chandeliers and stained glass glitter in the candlelight, guests will be serenaded by Consort musicians, including Artistic Co-Directors Ellen Hargis and David Douglass and world-famous lutenist Paul O’Dette.
After hors d'oeuvres, a four-course dinner will follow, with a choice of dishes inspired by an extraordinary 18th-century French cookbook: Le Festin joyeux. The book’s recipes were amassed by Louis XV’s “officier de bouche,” or head-chef, Monsieur Labas. When Le festin joyeux was published in 1738, it was the first cookbook ever to print its recipes as songs, in the popular style of airs and vaudevilles. Between courses, the Consort will entertain guests with performances of Festin de joyeux recipes!
Following dinner, guests may bid for exclusive artistic and cultural items during a live auction, including beach-house weekends, private concerts, tickets to Chicago-area concerts, and more. All proceeds from ticket sales and the auction go to supporting the Newberry Consort’s upcoming season.
The Halim Time & Glass Museum is a relatively new addition to the vibrant cultural milieu of Chicago. The museum, which opened in 2017, houses the private collection of the Halim family, which has collected timepieces and stained glass for more than three decades. The collection includes over 1,100 different clocks, from tower clocks and chronometers to automatons, pocket watches and tall case clocks. The galleries also boast 80 exquisite stained glass windows designed by some of the most sought-after artisans of the 19th and 20th-centuries, including many from the Tiffany Studios.
The Newberry Consort Gala will be held in the Halim Museum’s Wisteria Room, an exquisite space featuring a large stained glass dome and other treasures of the collection: stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany, unique chandeliers, paintings and art pieces.
