The Planets

Join the Northshore Concert Band as we look beyond our own world to the celestial unknown.

This season’s inaugural concert, The Planets, features selections from Gustav Holst’s masterwork of the same name celebrating its 100-year anniversary.

Angry and ominous, Holst’s first movement represents the Roman god of war, Mars. With its shimmering textures and ethereal solo passages, the music of Venus calls to mind the Roman goddess of love. Jupiter, the “Bringer of Jollity” and king of the gods, finishes the selection with its spirited and majestic music.

The lively and dynamic Symphony No. 2 by Frank Ticheli is reminiscent of the first rays of sunlight bursting over the horizon. Lux Aurumque, an evocative and colorful work by Eric Whitacre, is a dazzling depiction of the poem by Edward Esch “Light and Gold.” Join us for this captivating program to kick off our season, Music and Nature!
