Filmed at a sold-out concert at the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2018, the never-before-released video of Christmas on Sugarloaf Mountain gives a close-up view of the joyous program from GRAMMY winners Jeannette Sorrell and Apollo’s Fire. Fiddlers, medieval harp, hammered dulcimer, bagpipes, and singers join with children’s voices in this communal celebration of the American immigrant experience.
From 17th-century Ireland to a toe-tapping "barn dance" in Virginia… we follow the journeys of the Irish settlers who bravely crossed the Atlantic. The people of the mountains welcome Christmas with LOVE, SINGING, DANCING and PRAYER.
“Draws you deeper and deeper in… for all the breathless rollicking, there are tears under the surface that highlight a vital part of the Christmas story, enforced emigration and all. The quiet finale The Parting Glass reminds us that, sometimes, two beautiful voices entwined are powerful enough.”
– GRAMOPHONE (Festive Disc of the Year, 2018)
“Brilliant fiddling… astonishingly lovely harmony… It was riveting to hear this mostly forgotten music. The lightning strike of genius can happen, sometimes even repeatedly to those willing to earn it. Jeannette Sorrell is one such person. This show was spectacularly performed and deeply moving. If that’s not genius, I don’t know what is.”
