Some visitors to Evanston’s downtown farmers market this morning got an unpleasant surprise when their cars were towed away by Lincoln Towing Service.

Emily Guthrie, who’s one of the people whose car was towed, says farmers market patrons have been parking for some time in the vacant lot at 1881 Oak Ave.

But with plans moving forward to build a new high-rise apartment complex on the lot, and on an adjoining property at 1890 Maple Ave., the developer recently posted the vacant lot with a warning that cars parked there would be towed.

But Guthrie, who provided these photos, says the sign — at the far end of the 1881 Oak lot, up against the 1890 Maple building, was extremely hard for market patrons to spot — and left them unaware that parking there was no longer tolerated.

She says Lincoln Towing collected at least a half dozen cars from the lot this morning.

Market patrons of course can park in the city’s Maple Avenue garage and can get their garage ticket validated at the city’s market tent so they can park in the garage for free.

  1. Way, hey, tow them away

To me, way, hey, tow them away,

The Lincoln Park Pirates are we,

From Wilmette to Gary, there's nothin' so hairy

And we always collect our fee!

So it's way, hey, tow 'em away,

We plunder the streets of your town,

Be it Edsel or Chevy, there's no car too heavy,

And no one can make us shut down.
