The City of Evanston is looking for folks who’d like to join a friends group for the farmers market to help improve the market’s operation.
When the downtown farmers market was first established 35 years ago it was run by a farmers market commission, appointed like other city boards from among interested local residents. But in 1993 the commission was eliminated in a larger reorganization of city government.
Since the Evanston Food Policy Council was founded in 2005, it has been promoting the idea of a "friends of the market" group for the Evanston farmers market.
Green City Market in Chicago and the Oak Park farmers market have long been beneficiaries of active "friends" groups, which raise funds, provide some willing hands for market set-up, staff a table to provide general food, farm, and nutrition information.
For more information on joining the volunteer group contact market manager Zollie Webb at (847) 448-8138 or [email protected]
The downtown farmers market runs from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays starting May 8 in the open parking lot adjacent to the Maple Avenue garage.
