City officials this week approved plans to hang festoon lights across Dempster Street to add a festive atmosphere to storefronts in the block just east of Chicago Avenue.

Under the plans from the Main Dempster Mile marketing organization, 10 strings of the lights would be hung across the street between Chicago Avenue and the alley that divides the storefronts from the residential district to the east.

The city’s Design and Project Review Committee approved the plans on Wednesday, but specified that the lights need to be at least 16 feet above the street and should be turned off by 11 p.m. unless city staff approves a later shutoff time.

Katherine Gotsick, executive director for Main Dempster Mile, says she anticipates MDM’s supplier, Illuminight Holiday Lighting of Highland Park, will be able to install the new LED lighting in time for this year’s holiday season.
