State Rep. Laura Fine has introduced two bills aimed at increasing consumer access to renewable energy sources.

Fine (D-Glenview), whose district includes portions of Evanstson, says, “There are many people in our community and state that would use alternative energy sources if it was accessible to them.”

Fine is sponsoring House Bill 2920 which exempts businesses from paying sales tax on solar energy equipment. This sales tax exemption is designed to help businesses invest in renewable energy. State law already provides similar exemptions for residential customers who install solar energy on their property.

She also introduced House Bill 2922, requiring public utility companies to provide a renewable energy source option for electric customers. Under the legislation, utility companies would give their consumers the option to have their energy delivered from a renewable energy source.

“By encouraging business and public utilities to use solar and renewable energy, these measures make it easier for residents to use alternative energy in their everyday lives,” Fine said in a statement.

“In addition to the environmental and health benefits associated with renewable energy, it also offers an opportunity for job creation and economic growth,” said Fine. “As elected officials and business leaders look for ways to strengthen and grow our economy, the benefits of green energy must be considered. I will continue to sponsor legislations that support businesses, create jobs, and make our environment healthier for our children.”
