A fire in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood  shut down CTA service on the Red Line and Purple Line Express from the Loop to Evanston during the evening rush hour.

The Chicago Transit Authority reported Red Line service was disrupted from between the Belmont and North/Clybourn stations. And Purple Line Express service was not running at all.

Purple Line local trains between Howard Street and Linden Avenue in Wilmette continued to operate, as did Red Line trains on either side of the fire scene.

The Chicago Tribune reported that fire crews were called to Roy’s Home Furnishings, at 2455 N. Sheffield Ave., at about 3:30 p.m. Fire crews were still on the scene late into the evening.

Train service was shut off around 4 p.m. because of heavy smoke from the fire, and didn’t resume until late evening.

Shuttle buses were used to take passengers between the affected stations.
