Evanston Division Fire Chief Glenn Vanek retired Monday after a 24 year career with the department.

Vanek joined the department in 1993. He finished his career in charge of the department’s training program and special rescue operations.

Fire Chief Brian Scott says that as Vanek progressed through the ranks he consistently exhibited a genuine commitment to community service along with a great ability to train and professionally develop his fellow firefighters and paramedics.

He also served as a division-wide team leader for hazardous materials response as well as a member of the elite Urban Search and Rescue Task Force One for Illinois.

“Chief Vanek has always been a passionate and dedicated firefighter, paramedic and fire officer who always did his best to advance our mission, not only through the pursuit of his own personal excellence, but also by working hard to ensure excellence in those around him by coaching and mentorship,” Scott says. “We wish him a happy and healthy retirement and all the best with his future endeavors.”
