The challenger in Evanston’s 1st Ward aldermanic race, Ed Tivador, has picked up endorsements from the firefighters union local and former state Sen. Jeff Schoenberg.

Meanwhile, the incumbent, Alderman Judy Fiske, has won the backing of Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl.

Jason Hays, chairman of the union’s political action committee, said in a statement that Tivador’s “focus on public safety and security is vital for the success of Evanston as a community.”

“We agree with his stance that Evanston cannot grow and prosper unless its businesses and citizens are secure, and that maintaining resources and training for police and firefighters essential in accomplishing those goals.”

Tivador said that, as school superintendent of Northbrook/Glenview School District 30, he’s worked with Schoenberg. “I’ve relied on his council in my official capacity,” Tivador added, and “I’m personally touched to have his support for my aldermanic campaign.”

Fiske, on her campaign website, quotes the mayor as saying the incumbent “has shown real leadership on the City Council, working with me, the other aldermen and city staff to forge compromises and do what’s right for the entire city. And having an Evanston business owner on the council is a real plus.”

Tivador also lists endorsements from 9th Ward Aldeman Coleen Burrus, local bank executive Jay Lytle, business owners Dick Peach and Hecky Powell among several dozen other supporters.

  1. Mayor endorsement

One will never understand why the mayor is endorsing  Alderman Fiske. She knows that Fiske is not effective. And her opponent Ed Tivador is a  very well educated man with no hidden agenda who has run a large school district. He will represent the best interest of the First Ward as well as the entire city

That could be scary to the mayor. Thank goodness the Fire Department is smart and brave!
