Evanston fire fighters practiced techniques for rescuing people who’ve fallen through the ice this morning at the cooling pond on the Northwestern University campus.

During the training one firefighter went into the water while others practiced hauling him out safely using ropes and other gear.

Captain Glenn Vanek led the training exercise, along with firefighter/paramedic Gary Hicks.

Firefighters suit up for the exercise in some of the department’s nine yellow immersion suits.

The periodic training comes in handy in emergency situations — including one at the cooling pond last year in which a woman fell through the ice after following her dog out onto the pond and had to be rescued by firefighters.
